It turned out to be one of the most historic affairs in the England-India rivalry, as the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester ended in a draw after India saved their pride with a brilliant effort with the bat. After skipper Shubman Gill's ton, Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja brought up their respective centuries to help India stay alive in the series.
Here, we take a look at the highlights of Day 5 as the battle between England and India intensified in this crucial Test match at Old Trafford, Manchester.
India Lose Rahul Early, But Shubman Gill's Ton Keeps India In The Game
After finishing the day at 174/2, the duo of KL Rahul and skipper Shubman Gill walked out in Manchester, where KL Rahul departed on a score of 90 after being trapped in front of the stumps by opposition skipper Ben Stokes with a delivery that came back in and had his number, as India lost their third wicket on 188.
Despite the early breakthrough, Gill continued his merry ways and achieved a brilliant century, scoring 103 in the end with 12 boundaries, as he was then dismissed by Jofra Archer in the 88th over of the innings when India had 222 on the board. By lunch, India were 223 for the loss of four wickets, as they trailed by 88 runs.
Jadeja, Sundar's Classic Partnership Frustrates England Further As 4th Test Ends In A Draw
Following all the trouble, Washington Sundar, who was already on the crease, was then joined by Indian ace all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in the centre. They continued to frustrate England, as English bowlers tried their level best, but couldn't dismiss either of them.
Runs continued to flow, as by tea, India had 322 runs on the board for the loss of only four wickets, with Sundar batting on 58 and Jadeja on 53. By tea, they were only 11 runs behind England's score, adding 99 runs in the second session of the day and 100 runs for their partnership.
After tea, both the batters didn't look down, as they continued to smash England with visible intent, as the bowlers were getting frustrated with the runs coming from the middle of the blade.
In the end, both batters completed their well-deserved centuries, with Ravindra Jadeja scoring a brilliant 107*, while Sundar's 101* helped India save their pride in Manchester, as the fourth Test ended in a hard-fought draw, with the visitors putting up an effort when the game was looking out of their grip.
Both Sundar and Jadeja played 334 balls for the fifth wicket to smash 203 runs in this partnership, as England could never get the fifth wicket in their column.
India shook hands after scoring 425 as they played 143 overs, losing four wickets, as they achieved a lead of 114 runs in the end.
