In what was a pretty one-sided affair in Centurion, Sunrisers Eastern Cape beat Joburg Super Kings by 32 runs in the Eliminator match of the ongoing SA20 League 2025. It was an all-round bowling effort from the men in orange to restrict the Super Kings quite comprehensively and book their ticket for the Qualifier 2.
Joburg Super Kings have failed to reach the finals once again, meanwhile the Sunrisers Eastern Cape are just one match away from making it to their third final in a row.
Here's how Sunrisers Eastern Cape vs Joburg Super Kings panned out in Centurion:
Sunrisers vs Super Kings Highlights: JSK’s spin trio take down Sunrisers top four in the first half.
In the Eliminator match, Joburg Super Kings won the toss and asked Sunrisers to bat first. The men in yellow started the proceedings with pace but Sunrisers’ opening duo David Bedingham and Tony de Zorzi came out all guns blazing, scoring 42 off the first three overs of the powerplay.
In reply, captain Faf du Plessis introduced spin to break the momentum and Maheesh Theekshana wasted no time in getting the first breakthrough. Imran Tahir soon joined the party as the veteran leggie removed Bedingham in the very first ball of his spell.
Moeen Ali and Hardus Viljoen got a wicket each as the Sunrisers were in all sorts of trouble, having lost four wickets inside the first ten overs.
Sunrisers vs Super Kings Highlights: Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs rebuild the innings before Marco Jansen late fireworks.
Captain Aiden Markram, at five, alongside Tristan Stubbs, started to rebuild the innings as losing another wicket at that stage would have finished the job for du Plessis and his men.
The duo managed to stitch a partnership of 56 runs, before Marco Jansen (23 off 12) came into the middle and set the stage on fire with Markam in the last four overs.
The Sunrisers got to a formidable total of 184 runs after smashing 53 runs in the last four overs. Markram remained unbeaten with a 40-ball 62. Tahir was the pick of the bowlers for the Super Kings with two wickets in four overs, conceding just 21.
Notably, Lutho Sipamla had a night to remember as the right-arm pacer got hit for 72 runs in his four overs in the Eliminator.
Sunrisers vs Super Kings Highlights: Sunrisers’ rough start with the ball in the powerplay.
Chasing 185 in 20 overs, the Super Kings had a steady start as they managed 56 runs on the board with the loss of one wicket in the first six overs.
Devon Conway (30 off 20 balls) was looking dangerous but soon sent back by a cracker of a delivery outside off by Marco Jansen. Du Plessis had a watchful start and played second fiddle to the kiwi left-hander in the early phase of the powerplay.
However, just when it looked like the Super Kings’ skipper needed to change his gears Ottneil Baartman got his man and the Sunrisers got the much needed opening just before the halfway mark.
Sunrisers vs Super Kings Highlights: Bairstow’s effort goes in vain as the Sunrisers cruise their way to Qualifier 2.
After the end of the 10th over, Sunrisers ensured to keep the things tight and Craig Overton delivered a double wicket maiden to further derail the Super Kings.
Just when it felt like the game was pretty much done and dusted, Jonny Bairstow showed some fight and scored a brisk 37 off 17 to keep the Super Kings alive in the chase.
With 68 required in the last five overs, it was too late for the yellow army to turn things around and Markram and his men won it quite comfortably towards the end.
With the ball, Craig Overton was the pick of the bowlers for the Eastern Cape as he had a figure of 2/20 in his four, including a double wicket maiden. Ottneil Baartman played a key role as well, taking 2/25 in his four overs.
