Paarl Royals overwhelmed defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape in match number three of the SA20 2025 season at the Boland Park in Paarl. Rising star Lhuan-dre Pretorius unfurled the innings of the match to headline a clinical run-chase for the hosts to deter Aiden Markram’s first innings masterclass.
Here’s the timeline of how Royals vs Sunrisers panned out in Paarl:
Royals vs Sunrisers Highlights: Mujeeb Removes Sunrisers Openers Within Powerplay
Sunrisers Eastern Cape openers Jordan Hermann and Zak Crawley raced to a 38-run opening partnership in just a little above four overs after captain Aiden Markram won the toss and opted to bat first. However, Afghanistan-based spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman tilted the tide back in Paarl Royals’ favor in the space of just three deliveries by sending both well-set openers back to the sheds.
Tom Abell at number three listed three confident boundaries in his 12-ball 20, but the top-order batter fell short of his crease while completing a run as the Sunrisers slipped to 69-3 in nine overs.
Royals vs Sunrisers Highlights: Aiden Markram Leads From The Front With Fiery 82
Captain Aiden Markram led Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s counterattacking recovery by forming 102 runs for the fourth wicket with unbeaten wicketkeeper-batter Tristan Stubbs (28* off 26). Markram punched out seven boundaries and two sixes in his top-scoring act of 82 from 49 balls, before the senior South African was deceived by teenage pace sensation Kwena Maphaka in the final over of the innings.
Maphaka also rounded up Marco Jansen off the final ball as the Sunrisers Eastern Cape shaped 175-5 from their 20 overs.
Royals vs Sunrisers Highlights: Intense Pretorius Blows Away Sunrisers Attack
Paarl Royals opener Lhuan-dre Pretorius blew away Sunrisers attack with a range of boundaries and sixes early in the run-chase. The 18-year-old, in association with English international Joe Root, plundered 132 runs from the first 13 overs for the opening wicket.
Pretorius ransacked the defending champions with a 97-run hurricane from just 51 deliveries, launching 10 boundaries and six sixes and even outscoring England’s perennial batting legend in the process. The youngster only missed out his well-deserved century as he was trapped in front by Marco Jansen.
Royals vs Sunrisers Highlights: Joe Root Caps Easy Chase With 62*
Following the exit of a raging Lhuan-dre Pretorius, his opening partner Joe Root shrugged off the remaining required runs to steer Paarl Royals to a comfortable nine-wicket win in just 18.4 overs.
The senior Englishman scored a cracking 62* from 44 balls with four boundaries and a six, while his captain and number three batter David Miller compiled a run-a-ball 17*.
