SA vs WI, Session Review: West Indies Fights Back Courtesy Of Alzarri Joseph's Maiden Fifer

After being pushed down by the strong batting partnerships between the South African top order of Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram and Tony de Zorzi, the West Indies' side fired back with quick dismissals all of a sudden.

Starting the day on 314 for 8, the home side had Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee walking out to the middle looking to maximise their first innings score.

The day began with 82 overs being bowled on the first day and a new ball not taken, which ultimately was when they were just three balls into the morning. And it didn't take long for the Caribbean side to strike as in the eighty-fifth over of the innings bowled by express pacer Alzarri Joseph got Coetzee with short delivery.

With the score being 326 for nine, Anrich Nortje came in and played three good shots before being dismissed by the same pacer bagging his maiden fifer on the way.

The Proteas were bundled out for 342 which looked way below what they might have been first looking at.

Markram was the top-scorer of the side with a remarkable century as former skipper Elgar smashed 71 to give them a strong platform.

Windies lose two after before lunch

Skipper Kraigg Brathwaite and youngster Tagenarine Chanderpaul opened the innings for the visitors as they batted through the first six overs without any damage.

However, on the fourth delivery of the seventh over, the leader was done by a jaffa bowled by premier pacer Kagiso Rabada which got through his defence.

After that, Chanderpaul and incoming batter Raymon Reifer batted through the next ten overs with occasional boundaries by both of them. But the former lost his wicket to debutant Coetzee with an outstanding delivery that got his edge to gull.

Then, Jermaine Blackwood joined his partner in the middle and stayed at the crease till the end of the session with the score being 71 for two wickets, trailing by 271 of their opponent's score.

Talking Points:

  • Alzarri Joseph was lethal with his deliveries even today as he cleaned up the tail in no time. His express pace proved difficult for the Proteas to manage.
  • Kagiso Rabada bowled an absolutely unplayable delivery against the opponent skipper Kraigg Brathwaite beating his defence.

Expectations:

Proteas would want to make a thorough comeback with more quick wickets whereas the Windies side would expect to bat through the session without losing any further wickets.

Brief Score:

West Indies: 71/2 (20 Overs)

Tagenarine Chanderpaul 22 (48), Raymon Reifer 19* (34);
Kagiso Rabada 1/16 (6), Gerald Coetzee 1/20 (4)

Lunch Break: West Indies trail by 271 runs
