Sai Sudarshan has not only lived up to expectations but has truly shone in the first ODI against South Africa on foreign soil. His stellar performance in IPL 2023, particularly in the absence of Kane Williamson, had already turned heads, and in the initial ODI encounter, Sudarshan showcased his batting prowess, dominating the opposition and ensuring a triumphant outcome for the team.

Batting first after winning the toss, South Africa's innings never took off. Arshdep Singh claimed a fifer, while Avesh Khan picked up four wickets, dismantling the backbone of the Proteas at Wanderers Stadium. India was left with an easy target of 117 runs to chase.

India did not make things easier for themselves by starting the innings with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sai Sudarshan. Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed early, indirectly putting a lot of pressure on the young lad from Tamil Nadu. However, Sai Sudarshan didn't flinch even in a stadium where the entire opposition batting lineup had failed.

Batting with ease, the southpaw settled in with a boundary on the first ball he faced. Sai Sudarshan went on to score an unbeaten 55 from 43 deliveries, featuring nine fours against the South African bowling lineup.

Aside from a dropped catch in the final over of the game, Sai Sudarshan never gave the opposition a chance to get on his nerves. The cool and collected youngster is now being viewed as one for the future after just one game. The boundaries that he scored covered every part of the ground.

India will aim to clinch the series with a victory in the second ODI, while South Africa will be eager to force a decider when the teams meet on Tuesday at St George’s Oval. Shreyas Iyer is expected to leave the ODI side as he prepares to join the test team.
