In a dominant display of collective performance, Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 99 runs in the 3rd ODI to clinch the 3-game series. The Tigers’ batting woes once again troubled them as they succumbed to 186 in a 286-run chase.

Kusal Mendis set the foundation with a century, and Sri Lanka’s pace duo, Chameera and Asitha Fernando, carried forward the momentum in the chase to neutralise Bangladesh.

Kusal Mendis Slams Flamboyant Hundred

Sri Lanka’s first inning was off to a shaky start courtesy of Tanvir Islam and Tanzim Hasan’s dual strike with the new ball. With openers back in the hut at 69, Kusal Mendis anchored the inning with a 124-run partnership with skipper Charith Asalanka.

Mendis went on to score a century before getting dismissed by Shamim Hossain on 124 off 114 balls. Asalanka, on the other hand, also hit a half-century to accumulate 58 off 68 balls. This strong partnership propelled Sri Lanka to a fighting total of 285 runs.

Bangladesh bowlers, however, proved to be expensive. Except for skipper Mehidy Hasan, every bowler conceded runs at over a 5 economy rate. Tanvir Islam, who grabbed a fifer recently, leaked 61 runs in 10 overs. Taskin and Mehidy picked 2 wickets each.

Bangladesh Lack Intent Despite Towhid Hridoy’s Fightback

In the chase, Bangladesh’s top order was bulldozed by Chameera and Asitha Fernando. They dismissed Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Shanto early to reduce Bangladesh to 20/2 in the powerplay. The chase was getting trickier, and Sri Lanka’s threatening spinners were yet to bowl.

Amid challenging conditions, Towhid Hridoy showed some courage, hitting 51 off 78 balls. He knitted a 45-run partnership with Mehidy Hasan. But Chameera was lethal. He removed set batter Hridoy to strike at the right time. With just 156 runs on the board, Bangladesh lost 6 crucial wickets.

Sri Lanka Crush Bangladesh To 186/10

After Towhid’s wicket in the 33rd over, all hell broke loose. Chameera and Asitha Fernando overpowered the lower order and wiped them out to pick up 3-3 wickets each. Dunith Wellalage also snapped 2 wickets.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh miserably failed to build a partnership to survive. In less than 40 overs, they were bowled out for 186 runs, thus losing the game by a big margin of 99 runs.

With that, Sri Lanka sealed the 3-game series with a 2-1 finish as Bangladesh continued to struggle in this bilateral tour.
