Indian opener Rohit Sharma bludgeoned his way to a 30-ball half-century against Afghanistan in their recent World Cup 2023 meeting in Delhi. In doing so, the Indian captain levelled up with David Warner, and surpassed all-time great Sachin Tendulkar for a huge World Cup batting record.

Rohit Sharma Becomes Joint-Fastest to 1,000 World Cup Runs

Rohit Sharma, who started the 2023 edition with 978 World Cup runs to his name, was dismissed for a duck against Australia in India’s opening match of the tournament earlier this week. The cricketer made up for his rare failure with a scintillating all-out assault on Afghanistan bowlers in his very next outing, which saw him unleash a barrage of boundaries and sixes all across the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

When Sharma reached 22* in his breathtaking knock against Afghanistan, he completed 1,000 runs in his World Cup career. Achieving the milestone in just his 19th World Cup innings, the dashing opener levelled up with David Warner to become the joint-fastest batter in tournament’s history to reach the landmark figure.

Moreover, Sharma bettered Sachin Tendulkar’s record by an innings to become the fastest Indian batter to complete 1,000 runs across all World Cup matches.

Remarkably, Rohit Sharma also soared past Chris Gayle to become the most prolific six-hitter across all international formats. The right-hander launched four maximums within the first 15 overs of India’s run-chase against Afghanistan alone, taking his overall tally to 557 maximums.
