On a day of fluctuating fortunes and unexpected rain interruptions at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Indian captain Rohit Sharma put on a show and delivered a stunning half-century against Nepal in the Match 5 of Asia Cup 2023.

Rohit Sharma's fifty brings India on the brink of a win

Chasing a target of 231 set by Nepal, India had an uncharacteristic subdued start. Rohit, who is known for his explosive starts, took an unusually watchful approach, playing out an entire maiden over. It seemed as though he was biding his time, gauging the nature of the pitch, and understanding the pace of the Nepalese bowlers.

However, rain gods intervened, causing a significant break in the play. The revised target post the interruption stood at a more attainable 145 from 23 overs. What transpired post the rain break was nothing short of magic from the Indian skipper.

Making a comeback to the crease, Rohit looked rejuvenated and though he took a while to adjust against the Nepalese pacemen, the introduction of spin became the turning point of the game. He unleashed his wrath against Nepal's ace spinner, Sandeep Lamichhane, sending the ball soaring over the ropes for maximums and effortlessly placing it for boundaries.

Lamichhane bore the brunt of Rohit's bat twice in quick succession, with the latter hitting him for a pair of sixes and fours. The momentum seemed unstoppable, as Rohit combined his aggressive play with the grace and timing he's globally renowned for.

The highlight of his innings was reaching his half-century with a sublime pull shot, a shot that has, over the years, become synonymous with his name.

With India comfortably placed at 107/0 in just 14 overs, their progression to the Super Fours alongside Pakistan appears inevitable.
