Day 3 of the first Test between India and England at Headingley, Leeds, witnessed some drama as Indian vice-captain Rishabh Pant got visibly angry with the on-field umpire, Paul Reiffel. The incident took place in the first session, during the 63rd over of England’s first innings.

The 27-year-old wasn’t happy with the condition of the Dukes ball and walked up to the umpire to express his concern. He requested the umpire to check the ball, suspecting it might have gone out of shape.

Rishabh Pant Tries To Convince Umpire Reiffel

Umpire Reiffel did inspect the ball using the standard measuring gauge, but found it within the allowed limits. However, Rishabh Pant didn’t seem convinced by the response. A video clip that quickly went viral showed him throwing the ball away in frustration.

This outburst showed just how tense things have become on the field. Pant’s reaction reflected the pressure India are under as England continues to chip away at their lead.

What Happened In The Match?

Talking about the match, England had scored 327 runs for the loss of 5 wickets at lunch on Day 3. They are still trailing India by 144 runs, but have put up a strong fightback in the morning session.

India started the day with Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna. It was Krishna who struck early, removing Ollie Pope for 106. But Harry Brook didn’t let the momentum slip. He attacked both Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, playing aggressive strokes and building a steady partnership with Ben Stokes.

Siraj did manage to get rid of Stokes, but by then England had already added valuable runs. After Stokes departed, Brook formed another solid partnership with debutant Jamie Smith, adding 51 unbeaten runs before lunch.

As the match moves into the second session of Day 3, the tension is rising. With both teams pushing hard, the next few hours could be crucial in deciding who takes control of the Test.
