Richa Ghosh turbo-charged the Indian innings against the West Indies in the series-deciding third T20I match after the opening assault of Smriti Mandhana. Batting at number five, Ghosh smeared 54 runs off just 21 deliveries with three boundaries and five huge sixes at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on December 19.

Ghosh’s slog-overs fury helped Team India mount 217-4 to record their highest-ever T20I total in women’s cricket.

Batting at number five, Indian wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh arrived to the crease following the dismissal of half-centurion and innings’ top-scorer Smriti Mandhana at 143-3 in 14.4 overs. With just 32 balls remaining in the innings, the 21-year-old faced 21 of them to whack 54 runs, thus extending the Indian total to a monumental 217-4.

Remarkably, Ghosh reached her half-century from just 18 balls to record India’s fastest T20I fifty, and the joint-fastest overall alongside New Zealand’s Sophie Devine and Australia’s Phoebe Litchfield.

Notably, Smriti Mandhana held the record of India’s fastest women’s T20I half-century before Richa Ghosh’s blitzkrieg. Back in early 2019, the elegant Indian opener brought up her fifty off just 24 balls during an away T20I against New Zealand in Wellington.

Nonetheless, Team India’s 217-4 was largely fueled by Mandhana’s 47-ball 77 and Ghosh’s 21-ball 54. Middle-order batters Jemimah Rodrigues and Raghvi Bist also chipped in with swift 30s in the innings as the ‘Women in Blue’ charged over the visiting West Indies team in the series-decider.

Earlier this week, India won the first T20I before a Hayley Matthews-inspired West Indies bounced back in the second to bring the series to levelling terms.
