India produced a dominant all-round display to crush West Indies by an innings and 140 runs in the opening Test of the 2025 series at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. The hosts outplayed the visitors in every department, wrapping up the contest inside three days.

Let's take a look at how things went in Ahmedabad as Shubman Gill & Co. put on a dominant show.

Windies collapse early in the match

Put into bat first, West Indies collapsed to 162 in their first innings. Their top order once again faltered as Tagenarine Chanderpaul departed for a duck, followed by John Campbell for 8. Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah ran through the batting, sharing seven wickets between them.

Despite some resistance from Justin Greaves (32), Shai Hope (26), and skipper Roston Chase (24), the Windies failed to cope with the relentless pressure. Siraj was the pick with figures of 4/40, while Bumrah returned 3/42 as India took early control.

KL Rahul and Jadeja's century stamp authority

In reply, India’s batters stamped their authority with a ruthless performance. KL Rahul struck a patient 100 off 197 balls, his first century at home in nine years, while captain Shubman Gill chipped in with 50. Dhruv Jurel was the star of the innings, compiling a superb 125 with 15 fours and three sixes, and was well supported by Ravindra Jadeja, who made an unbeaten 104.

Together, Jurel and Jadeja added a mammoth 206-run stand for the fifth wicket, guiding India to a commanding 448/5 declared. With a massive 286-run lead, the hosts pushed West Indies straight into survival mode.

The Day 3 dominance of India

The second innings on Day 3 followed a similar script, as West Indies once again crumbled under the weight of India’s bowling attack. Alick Athanaze fought hard with a well-made 38 off 74 balls, while Justin Greaves (25) and Jayden Seales (22) showed some lower-order resistance. However, wickets fell regularly with Ravindra Jadeja spinning a web around the visitors.

The left-arm all-rounder claimed 4/54, while Siraj (3/31) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/23) chipped in. West Indies were bundled out for 146 in 45.1 overs, handing India an emphatic win.

The margin of victory, by an innings and 140 runs, reflected India’s dominance across all three days. With contributions from both bat and ball, the hosts not only took a 1-0 lead in the series but also sent a strong message of their home supremacy.
