In a remarkable achievement, veteran cricketer Pat Cummins bagged an elite record as he became only the third player to score 1000 runs and take 100 wickets in the World Test Championship. The Australian captain attained the landmark on day 1 of the third Test against West Indies at Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica.
Pat Cummins Achieves Unique All-Round Milestone
Led by Cummins, Australia had a tough day on the field as the West Indies bundled them out for 225 runs. Although Cameron Green and Steve Smith struck valuable forties, the failures of Usman Khawaja, Travis Head and Sam Konstas worked in the hosts' favour.
However, skipper Pat Cummins and keeper-batter Alex Carey played crucial cameos, ensuring Australia breached the 200-run mark. Thus, Cummins brought up his thousandth run in the World Test Championship. He joined Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin as only the third cricketer and first-ever Australian to have 1000 runs and more than 100 wickets in the WTC history.
Players with 1000 runs and 100-plus wickets in WTC
- Ravichandran Ashwin - 1142 runs and 195 wickets
- Ravindra Jadeja - 2151 runs and 134 wickets
- Pat Cummins - 1015 runs and 213 wickets
It's worth mentioning that Pat Cummins is Australia's second highest wicket-taker in the WTC. He is only behind Nathan Lyon, who has 219 scalps to his name in the history of the competition.
After Cummins and Carey's cameos powered Australia to 225, West Indies had a shaky start to their first innings. Ace speedster Mitchell Starc, who is playing his 100th Test, cleaned up West Indies opener Kevlon Anderson for three runs. The hosts could crawl to 16 for one in nine overs before stumps was called on the opening day.
