Pakistan and West Indies shared honours on a topsy-turvy opening day of the first Test match at the Multan Cricket Stadium on January 17. Notably, the foggy weather in Multan limited the number of overs to just 41.3.

PAK vs WI Highlights: Seales, Motie Remove Both Pakistan Openers

West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales delivered the opening breakthrough for the hosts with an early wicket of Pakistan opener and Test debutant Muhammad Hurraira. Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, tasked to open the bowling, also struck with the new ball by dismissing Pakistan captain Shan Masood for just 11 inside the first 45 minutes of play.

By the time of reaching 20 runs in eight overs, the hosts ended up losing both their openers to concede an early advantage to the West Indies bowlers.

Jayden Seales also trapped Kamran Ghulam plumb in front of stumps for just five, and induced a big nick off Babar Azam (eight off 20) a couple of overs later as Pakistan crashed to 46-4 at one stage of the day. Removing both Pakistan middle-order batters for single digit scores, Seales recorded exceptional figures of 3-21 from his 10 overs of the day before stumps.

Forming forces at 46-4, Pakistan’s middle-order batters Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan defied Jayden Seales and co. with a cunning 97-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Leading the hosts to a commendable recovery, both cricketers composed brilliant half-centuries and remained unbeaten till stumps on Day 1.

Batting at number five, Shakeel listed four boundaries and batted out 100 deliveries to score 50* regal runs. Wicketkeeper-batter and white-ball captain Rizwan, on the other hand, conjured 51* runs off 80 balls with seven elegant boundaries.

The two unbeaten batters will now resume the first Pakistani innings at 143-4 from 41.3 overs on Day 2 of the series-opening Multan Test.
