Nathan Lyon ran through New Zealand in the second-innings of the Wellington Test to clinch a comprehensive win for the Australians. The great off-spinner, who recorded figures of 6 for 65, bundled out the Trans-Tasman rivals for just 196 runs in defence of the imposing 369-run target at the historic Basin Reserve ground.

The ace spin stalwart not only bagged his 24th five-wicket haul for Australia in Test cricket but also achieved a pair of eye-catching records with his remarkable performance in the opening Test of the two-match series.

Having ended with impressive figures of 4 for 43 in the first half of the Test match, Lyon's six-fer in the final innings of the encounter against the BlackCaps gave him a special ten-wicket haul, which broke a longstanding drought of a spinner recording 10 or more wickets in a Test on Kiwi shores.

Lyon's 10-fer ended the jinx for spinners coming to New Zealand as he became the first men's spinner since December 2006 to take a ten-wicket haul in the country. The previous spinner to record 10 or more wickets in New Zealand was Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan.

It was also only the 12th instance of a spinner taking 10 or more wickets in New Zealand in the history of Test cricket, an elite list that Lyon would be proud to have joined in Wellington.

Before taking his 10-fer, Lyon scripted a record five-wicket haul with the wicket of the dangerous Glenn Phillips. It was his 24th fifer, which also etched him on an esteemed list of spinners with fifers in most countries at the Test level.

Lyon now has a five-wicket haul each in Sri Lanka, West Indies, India, Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh, England, Pakistan and New Zealand. He is now just the third spinner to do so after legendary Shane Warne and Muralitharan.
