Bangladesh seems to have taken a leaf out of England’s ‘BazBall’ textbook, as they proved that their aggressive first-innings intent was no fluke. The hosts batted with the same belligerent mindset in their second batting recital, considering the heavy punishments they inflicted over each Afghan bowler late on Day 2.

Earlier in the day, the Bangladeshi tail failed to wag after overnight batters Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz missed out on their respective fifties.

Afghanistan fightback restricts Bangladesh to 382

Resuming at 362-5, Bangladesh looked settle for a 500-plus score. However, overnight batters Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz missed out on their respective half-centuries, and their dismissals triggered a lower-order batting collapse for the hosts.

They lost their final five wickets in a space of just nine runs, as Afghanistan bowlers dusted them out for just 382 after a batting-friendly opening day. Debutant Nijat Masood completed his maiden Test five-fer, while Yamin Ahmadzai struck twice in his spell.

Notably, Bangladesh faced just 86 overs to whack 382, thus maintaining a prolific run-rate of nearly four-and-a-half an over.

Ebadot Hossain’s four-fer folds up Afghanistan for 146

Afghanistan’s response started shoddily as they lost their top four for just 51 on the board around lunch break. Bangladeshi speed merchant Ebadot Hossain wrecked the visitors top-order, as he sent Abdul Malik and number three Rahmat Shah cheaply back to the pavilion.

Hossain snared two more victims to finish with a four-fer, while spinner Taijul Islam polished off the tail to shoot out Afghanistan for just 146 in the final session of the day.

Middle-order batters Afsar Zazai and Nasir Jamal top-scored in the innings with crucial 30s and received little-to-no assistance from the rest of the batting line-up.

Shanto, Hasan club 50s to mount Bangladeshi lead

Bangladesh, enjoying a 236-run pre-inning advantage, launched their run-scoring splurge from the outset, with opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy sacrificing his wicket in quest of quick runs.

Thereafter, his partner Zakir Hasan and number three Najmul Hossain Shanto charted sparkling half-centuries in their unbeaten 116-run stand, which guided their side through stumps without further casualty.

The two consumed 64 deliveries each from their end, to unleash 54*. They will now resume Bangladesh’s second innings at 134-1 on Day 3, with a nifty lead of 370 runs in the bank.
