Indian cricket team failed in the ICC tournament victory once again. The aspirations of securing another ICC trophy were dashed as Australia convincingly defeated Rohit Sharma and Co. in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2023. The summit clash ended in a significant defeat for India, with a margin of 209 runs.

Despite having a lineup filled with renowned match-winners, India have missed out on eight chances to claim an ICC title since the 2013 Champions Trophy, including two World Test Championship Finals. The inability to win a major tournament remains an enigma that even the greatest minds in cricket have been unable to solve.

Several former cricketers have expressed their opinions and viewpoints regarding the reasons behind India's loss in the WTC Final. One of them was former West Indian cricketer Andy Roberts who slammed Team India for their poor performance in the WTC Final.

'Indian Cricket Has Been Crept By Arrogance': Andy Roberts

"There is this arrogance which has crept into Indian cricket and through this, India have underestimated the rest of the world. India must decide what their focus is—Test cricket or limited overs cricket. T20 cricket will run its course. There is no contest between bat and ball there," Roberts told mid-day.

Despite having the likes of batting giants through their ranks, India have time and again been failing with the bat during top-flight matches. Roberts expressed his anticipation for a more impressive batting performance from India during the WTC Final 2023.

"I expected India to show their batting strength. I saw no bright spot in the final although Ajinkya Rahane fought hard; got hit on his hand. Shubman Gill looks good when he plays those shots, but he stands on the leg stump and is often dismissed bowled or caught behind. He has good hands, but he must get behind the ball. Virat Kohli, though, got a brute of a delivery from Mitchell Starc in the first innings."

"India have some very good players mind you, but they have not performed creditably away from home," he further added.

He concluded by saying that he was surprised by seeing that Ravichandran Ashwin was dropped from the side in the final game.

"Dropping Ashwin was ridiculous. How can you not pick your best spinner? Unbelievable. The think-tank’s decision to pick four quick bowlers (Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Shardul Thakur) appeared fine to him except the fact that not one of those four is very tall. "That would have made a difference in terms of bounce," Roberts concluded.

After the bizarre play in the UK, the Men in Blue have gotten a long break to switch themselves off before they travel to the Caribbean Islands for a three-format series in July-August.
