As the cricket world braces for a series of thrilling clashes, familiar legends are stepping back into the spotlight. The New Zealand side is locking horns with England, and Kane Williamson returned to the Kiwi squad for the first time after the Champions Trophy final.

While fans were anticipating a mighty comeback from the legendary batter, he walked away on a first-ball duck. The brief outing placed him in an unwanted record list alongside a Kiwi great.

Williamson matches Hadlee’s unwanted record

Just like the entire world waited for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s return to international cricket, Kane Williamson’s return was also on the cards. Staying away from the ODIs since the Champions Trophy 2025 final, he returned in the Kiwi squad against England, and the side got a huge boost with his arrival.

After the legend returned in the 50-over format, fans were waiting for some classic Williamson innings on the ground, but a disappointment hit hard. Chasing down the total, he joined Rachin Ravindra after Will Young’s dismissal. Just as Williamson aimed for a memorable comeback, Brydon Carse turned the tables, sending the Kiwi legend back for a first-ball duck.

The duck did not disappoint the Kiwi batter as it landed him in an unwanted record. With that duck, he joined New Zealand legend Sir Richard Hadlee on the list of New Zealand batters with the most international ducks against England.

Kiwis strive for comeback after early hiccups

Despite the New Zealand bowlers proving to be heavy on the English batters, England skipper Harry Brook led the way from the front. Standing on a crucial point, he played a game-changing 135-run knock and helped England to put on a total of 223 runs.

The target looked easy for the Kiwis, but the lethal English kept them away from their plans. After Will Young and Kane Williamson’s dismissals, Rachin Ravindra tried to flip the script, but Luke Wood dismissed him on 17 runs. With Daryl Mitchell and Bracewell on the crease, New Zealand is looking for a rapid chase to seal the victory.
