Mohammed Shami etched his name in history books during the World Cup 2023 semifinal against New Zealand in Mumbai on Wednesday. Shami picked up his fourth five-wicket haul in World Cups and set a new benchmark, surpassing previous records and highlighting his extraordinary skill.

Mohammad Shami went past Mitchell Starc in terms of World Cup fifers

Previously, Shami was tied with Australia's Mitchell Starc, who had achieved three five-wicket hauls, two of which came in the 2019 World Cup and one in 2015. However, Shami's consistent excellence in the 2023 World Cup has seen him leapfrog Starc. In this edition alone, Shami claimed impressive fifers against New Zealand and Sri Lanka during the league stage, with his fourth fifer coming against England in the 2019 World Cup.

This achievement is not just about numbers. Shami has also become the first bowler to secure three five-wicket hauls in a single World Cup edition, a feat that overshadows Starc's 2019 record.

His performance in the semi-final against New Zealand was particularly remarkable, where he claimed 7 wickets for 57 runs, marking not only his career-best figures but also establishing him as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 23 wickets in just six matches.

India's victory in the semi-final, underpinned by Shami's extraordinary seven-fer and bolstered by centuries from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, resulted in a commanding 70-run win over New Zealand. Batting first, India posted a formidable total of 397/4 in their 50 overs.

Despite a fighting century from Daryl Mitchell and a significant contribution from Kane Williamson, New Zealand was limited to 327 all out, falling short by 70 runs.

As India prepares for the World Cup 2023 final, set to be held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad against the winner of the semi-final between South Africa and Australia, Shami's record-breaking performance has not only uplifted the team but has also marked him as one of the finest bowlers in World Cup history.
