List of all players given retired out in 2026 [Source: @cricbuzz/x.com]
The ongoing BBL has turned out to be a nightmare for Pakistan and Melbourne Renegades batter Mohammad Rizwan. He came into the tournament with the mission to secure his place in the T20 World Cup squad, but with 8 matches over, he now finds himself in contention to be removed from the Renegades playing XI.
The breaking point came in the clash against the Sydney Thunder as Rizwan struggled for runs and scored only 26 off 23 balls as Renegades captain Will Sutherland decided to call Rizwan back in the dugout and the batter was given “retired out.”
Eventually, Melbourne Renegades struggled for runs and only managed to post 170/8 as the team lost the clash against the Thunder on DLS basis. This year has just started, and we have already witnessed six different instances where a batter was given retired out, and here is a complete list.
List of all players who have been retired out in 2026 so far
| Batters | Team | Opposition | Runs scored | Date |
| Mohammad Rizwan | Melbourne Renegades | Sydney Thunder | 26 off 23 | January 12 |
| Timothy Pringle | Northern Districts | Canterbury | 5 off 12 | January 8 |
| Roston Chase | Pretoria Capitals | Durban's Super Giants | 24 off 15 | January 7 |
| Jeet Raval | Northern Districts | Otago | 23 off 28 | January 4 |
| Xavier Bell | Northern Districts | Otago | 9 off 13 | January 4 |
| Nic Maddinson | Sydney Thunder | Hobart Hurricanes | 30 off 26 | January 3 |
- Rizwan became the latest victim as he failed to deliver the goods and his 23-ball 26 was not enough as the management decided to bring him back midway through his innings.
- Timothy Pringle, Xavier Bell, and Jeet Raval attained the unwanted feat while playing in the Super Smash competition in New Zealand.
- While Roston Chase and Nic Maddinson entered the unfortunate feat while playing in SA20, and BBL respectively.
Rizwan's poor BBL 2025-26 season in numbers
Melbourne Renegades bought Rizwan with a lot of hope as they invested heavily in the Pakistan keeper, but with eight matches over, performances have been negligible. He has just racked up 167 runs, with a strike-rate just above 100. In these eight games, he has only struck a solitary six as the Renegades batter has struggled to get used to the Australian pitches.
The frustration boiled against Thunder when Sutherland decided to retire him out, and this points towards the end of the road for Rizwan in BBL.
What this 'retired out' means for Rizwan's Pakistan future
Rizwan is Pakistan’s first-choice keeper in ODIs and Tests, but that is not the case in T20Is. Ever since getting dropped from the Asia Cup squad, he has been neglected by the selectors, but the BBL provided him with an opportunity to redeem himself.
However, the performances have been poor, and Rizwan was not named in the Pakistan provisional squad for the T20 World Cup, and it could be the doors closed for him in the T20Is as well.
