The IND vs SA 2nd Test at Guwahati saw some major humiliation inflicted by South Africa bowlers as well as their batting unit. India recorded a massive defeat of 408 runs under the stand-in captain Rishabh Pant.
While the defeat was a historic win for South Africa, the collapse of India saw it break some major records but not in the positives of things. Hence, let's take a look at all of the unwanted records that India broke after their loss against South Africa at Barsapara Stadium.
1. India's biggest home defeat by runs recorded in Guwahati Test
India has made an unwanted record of having the biggest defeat on their own home soil by runs. The Guwahati Test marks the topmost defeat for India with 408 runs, with losses against Australia by 342 runs and 333 runs following.
2. South Africa register second-biggest win in their Test history
India also tallies one of the biggest wins for South Africa in Test cricket. After South Africa's 2018 victory over Australia by 492 runs, India's loss in Guwahati in 2025 ranks second as South Africa stormed through the Indian batting lineup.
3. India's biggest defeat to South Africa by runs in Test cricket
India also recorded another biggest defeat against South Africa in Test cricket. This Test marks the highest margin of defeat by runs, where they were beaten by 408 runs. Their defeats record 329 runs in Kolkata in 1996 and 328 runs in Durban in 1996-2.
4. One of India's biggest defeats in overall Test cricket history
This defeat also stands as one of the biggest defeats for India in Test cricket, as 342 against Australia at Nagpur in 2004 records as the second-highest one.
5. Sai Sudarshan records lowest strike rate by an Indian in a Test innings
Sai Sudarshan also recorded the lowest strike rate by an Indian batter in a Test innings with a minimum of 100 balls. Sai Sudarshan against South Africa in Guwahati recorded 14 runs off 139 deliveries, as Yashpal Sharma tops the list with 13 runs off 157 balls back in 1981 against Australia.
Sai Sudarshan recorded a strike rate of 10.07 which, though gritty, harmed India's prospects in the Test on Day 5. Interestingly, Rahul Dravid names 4th on the list with his 12.84 strike rate against Australia while he scored 14 off 109 deliveries back in 1999.
6. India record another Test whitewash at home; third since 2000
India also etched another unwanted record since 2015 for being whitewashed in Tests under skippers Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant in 2025. India recorded three home series whitewashes after the defeat at Guwahati. Virat Kohli holds the record for the most whitewashes for India since 2015 in away matches in twenty series.
7. Third instance of India being whitewashed in a home Test series
Another instance of India being whitewashed in a bilateral Test series at home saw this South Africa series recorded as the third one, with the New Zealand Test series in 2024 being the second and a South Africa series in 2000 being the first.
8. India fail to reach 250 even once in a home series for the first time
With this defeat, India also marks a new low as this series becomes the first home series where the team wasn't able to touch the 250-run mark in any of the innings. The South Africa bowlers outwitted the batters to bundle them up inside paltry scores.
9. India fail to score a century at home in two straight Tests for the first time since 1969
India also had two matches at home in Tests without a century by a single player. The previous record, as calculated, was against New Zealand, who beat India in three matches where India couldn't score a century in a Test back in 1969.
