In a development that could concern the Indian fans, premier all-rounder Washington Sundar has sustained a finger injury a day before the first Test against the West Indies. Sundar has been an integral member of the Indian Test side, and it will indeed be a huge setback if he misses the first Test, starting on October 2 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Washington Sundar experiences discomfort due to finger injury
Washington Sundar was one of India's most important players on the recently concluded England tour. Apart from scoring 284 runs at a superb average of 47.33, Sundar showcased his spin-bowling expertise, scalping seven wickets across four Test matches against the Englishmen.
However, the experienced campaigner seemed to have sustained a finger injury on his bowling arm just a day prior to the first Test against the West Indies. As reported by the Times of India, Sundar refrained from the fielding drills due to an injured finger while asking for attention from the BCCI medical team.
The report claims that although Sundar was seen fine-tuning his bowling skills through long spells, the unfortunate finger injury prevented him from participating in the catching drills. Skipper Shubman Gill had a brief chat with him before the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja, and Nitish Reddy joined the discussion, checking the seriousness of the injury.
What could be India's combination if Sundar misses out due to finger injury?
Washington Sundar's stellar success in England made him one of the frontrunners to enter India's playing XI for the first Test against the West Indies. However, with the finger of his bowling arm getting heavily taped, it won't be surprising if India exclude him from their combination for the first Test.
If Sundar misses out, we might see Nitish Reddy playing alongside Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja as the all-rounders. Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav could make his way back into the playing XI after being ignored for batting depth on the England tour.
