In a significant development, New Zealand's former skipper Kane Williamson will not take the field in the 2nd innings of Champions Trophy 2025 final against India as he has reportedly developed a side strain injury. The right-hand batter's day went from bad to worse as Cricbuzz reported that Williamson developed the injury while batting.
The report also mentioned that Mark Chapman will field in place of Kane. Further, the right-hand batter had a day to forget with the bat as he scored just 11 (14) before just handing a simple catch to Kuldeep Yadav, who took the catch off his own bowling.
"Team update | Kane Williamson will not field in the second innings of the Champions Trophy final due to a quad strain sustained while batting. Mark Chapman has taken his place in the field," read the press release.
Kane Williamson's Tryst With Injury
The past couple of years haven't been great for Williamson in terms of fitness as he has missed most of action because of injuries. Earlier, he broke his leg in the opening game of IPL 2023 and missed nearly the entire year before making a comeback in 2023 World Cup.
However, it followed with a thumb injury that ruled him out of the tournament. Now when it looked that Williamson is returning to form, he has suffered a side strain and the extend of the injury is yet to be known.
Talking about the ongoing match, the Kiwis put just 251 runs on the board and they would miss Kane on the field because of his experience and valuable inputs. Nonetheless, at the time of writing this article, India are 30/0 after 4.2 overs.
