In a remarkable achievement, Joe Root has surpassed Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis on the list of highest run-getters in Test cricket. The talismanic batter attained the landmark on day 3 of the ongoing Test against India at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Root Goes Past Dravid, Kallis On Elite List

After Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley ensured a great start to England's first innings, Joe Root and Ollie Pope carried the momentum forward, frustrating the visitors with their grit and determination. Thus, Root eventually surpassed Kallis and Dravid's tally of Test runs, claiming the third position on the elusive list.

Most runs in Test cricket

  • Sachin Tendulkar - 15921 runs in 329 innings
  • Ricky Ponting - 13378 runs in 287 innings
  • Joe Root - 13294* runs in 286 innings
  • Jacques Kallis - 13289 runs in 280 innings
  • Rahul Dravid - 13288 runs in 286 innings

As mentioned above, India's legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar stills holds the record for the most runs in Tests, having amassed 15921 runs across 329 innings. Australia's multiple ICC title winning skipper Ricky Ponting is second on the list with 13378 Test runs under his belt.

Root, who has already raced to 13294 runs, can dethrone Ponting on the list by the end of the series, as he needs only 84 more runs to claim the second position.

Talking about the Manchester Test, Root and Ollie Pope's stoic batting has ensured a positive start to the first session of the third day for England. Both players have looked rock-solid, steadily guiding the hosts towards a valuable first-innings lead.

As of writing, England were 268 for two, with Joe Root and Ollie Pope batting on 35* and 34*, respectively.
