Star England batter Joe Root has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the highest run-scorer in India-England Test matches.

Root surpassed the previous record held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed 2,535 runs in 32 matches against England, boasting an average of 51.73. Tendulkar's impressive record included seven centuries and 13 fifties.

The 33-year-old Root achieved this milestone on the first day of the ongoing first Test against the host India at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. He surpassed Tendulkar in his 26th match against the Indian team, maintaining an average of over 60 in Tests against India.  This achievement solidifies his place in the history of the India-England Test rivalry.

Before the start of the Test match, Root needed just 10 runs to become the leading run-scorer in India versus England Test matches.

Root holds the record for the highest number of centuries in India-England Tests, boasting nine tons. This places him ahead of Alastair Cook, Rahul Dravid, and Tendulkar, each with seven hundreds. The Yorkshire batter has smashed 10 half-centuries and nine centuries in Tests against India.

Apart from his overall record, Root has an impressive Test record in India, amassing 970 runs at an average of over 50 in 11 matches, including two centuries. He’s close to getting another record for scoring 1000 runs on Indian soil.

In previous tours to India, Root scored 93 runs in one Test match during the 2012 tour, 491 runs in five Tests at an average of 49.10 with one hundred in the 2016 tour, and 368 runs at an average of 46 during the 2021 tour.

Following Root and Tendulkar on the list of batters with the most runs in India vs. England Test matches are Sunil Gavaskar, Alastair Cook, and Virat Kohli, who’s the only active cricketer in the top five.

In the ongoing match in Hyderabad, Root is currently at the crease with a score of 18 (35). Earlier in the day, England won the toss and chose to bat first. Openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett made a solid start, establishing a fifty-run partnership. However, their momentum waned when the spinners entered the attack, resulting in the dismissal of both openers.

Ollie Pope followed suit, and suddenly England found themselves at 60-3. Nevertheless, Root and Jonny Bairstow (32*) steadied the ship and guided the visiting team to 108-3 at Lunch on Day 1.
