In a remarkable achievement, legendary English cricketer Joe Root added another feather to his crown, bringing up 8000 runs as a number four batter in Test cricket. The stylish right-hander unlocked the feat on day 4 of the ongoing Test against India at Lord's Cricket Ground.

Root Joins Cricket Legends With 8000 Runs At Number 4

Joe Root has been the backbone of England's batting unit in Test cricket. Although he batted at three at the initial stage of his career, his demotion to four worked wonders, with the batter contributing handsomely to England's success in the format.

Root, who struck a magnificent century in the first innings of the Lord's Test, went on to score his 8000th run at four in the subsequent outing, thereby joining several legends of the game.

It's worth mentioning that Sachin Tendulkar, Mahela Jayawardene and Jacques Kallis are the only players with 8000 or more runs at number four in Tests. Thus, Root became the first-ever English batter and the fourth overall cricketer to attain the landmark.

Most runs at number four in Test cricket

  • Sachin Tendulkar - 13492
  • Mahela Jayawardene - 9509
  • Jacques Kallis - 9033
  • Joe Root - 8014*
  • Virat Kohli - 7564

Thus, as mentioned above, talismanic cricketer and former Indian captain Virat Kohli doesn't have 8000 runs at number four in Tests. While Root claims the fourth place on the list of highest run-getters at that position, Tendulkar, Jayawardene and Kallis occupy the first three spots, respectively.

Regarding the Lord's Test, Root and Ben Stokes are fighting an intense battle with India's in-form pace battery. With the surface undergoing steady deterioration, the visitors might find it tough to chase anything around the 250-run mark. As of writing, England were 109 for four, with Root and Stokes batting on 23* and 6*, respectively.
