The disappointment for West Indies continues in the second Test at Delhi, as India appears to be in formidable control after stumps on Day 1. India won the toss as Shubman Gill broke his long toss-losing streak as Test captain and chose to bat first. The decision seemed to have paid off, with India standing at 318 for 2 at the end of Day 1. Let's take a look at how the match panned out at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

KL Rahul flops; Sai, Jaiswal shine on Day 1

India started off with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul. While the opening pair looked solid with their 58-run partnership off 105 balls, the more experienced KL Rahul fell to West Indies’ Jomel Warrican in the 18th over.

That was an early blow for India, as the team looked to settle for big scores by the end of Day 1. However, it seems like Rahul’s loss was not something India was about to sit and cry over, since Yashasvi Jaiswal took up the mantle to stitch together a mammoth score of 173 runs off 253 balls.

Warrican's efforts not enough to dent India's batting lineup

After KL Rahul’s dismissal, Sai Sudharsan came to the crease and partnered with Jaiswal for a massive 193-run stand that tired out the West Indies bowlers. However, Warrican struck again and hunted Sai Sudharsan down in the 69th over. Sudharsan went back to the pavilion with 87 runs in his bag.

Shubman Gill came in next and will continue on Day 2 with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who put up a praiseworthy performance on the board. Notably, Jaiswal's innings featured 22 boundaries at a strike rate of 68.38, which does not exactly replicate his “Jais-Ball” style but underlines his grit in the game.

As both Jaiswal and Gill continue tomorrow, the West Indies bowlers will need to up the ante if they want to stay in the series as well as in the match. With only Warrican finding success, the most expensive of the lot was Roston Chase, who gave away 55 runs from just 13 overs at an economy rate of 4.23.
