Lucknow Super Giants delivered a stunning performance to defeat Chennai Super Kings in a nail-biting finish, clinching a six-wicket victory in Match 39 of IPL 2024 on Tuesday at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.


Ruturaj Gaikwad's Century Anchors CSK to Colossal Total

Having been put into bat first, Chennai Super Kings faced early setbacks after being sent in to bat first. The Super Giants' bowlers capitalized on their initial advantage as Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for a solitary one run in the opening over.

The powerplay continued to see wickets tumble, with Daryl Mitchell making his exit at 11 runs, leaving CSK in a spot of bother.

However, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad rose to the occasion, playing an array of stunning strokes to anchor his team's innings. Gaikwad's heroics were well complemented by Shivam Dube, who came out with all guns blazing, adding a quickfire 50 for the fourth wicket partnership.

The duo turned the tide, setting the stage ablaze with their aggressive batting. Gaikwad, notching his century in just 56 balls, became the first CSK captain to hit a hundred, ultimately staying unbeaten at 108.

Dube’s explosive 66 off 27 balls propelled CSK to a formidable 210, setting a steep mountain to climb for the Lucknow Super Giants.


Stoinis' Herculean Effort Seals Victory for LSG

Chasing a colossal 211, LSG's start was less than ideal as opener Quinton de Kock fell for a duck in the very first over. Skipper KL Rahul tried to stabilize the innings but could only muster 16 runs before his dismissal in the fifth over, leaving LSG reeling.

However, Marcus Stoinis stepped up to the plate, taking matters into his own hands with a stunning display of power hitting. Partnering first with Devdutt Padikkal, who struggled to find his rhythm, Stoinis shifted gears upon being joined by Nicholas Pooran.

Together, they knitted a rapid 70-run partnership off just 34 balls for the fourth wicket. Pooran’s quickfire 34 off 15 balls ended as he holed out, but Stoinis was unflinched.

Continuing his lone battle, Stoinis etched his name into IPL history by slamming his maiden century. His unbeaten 124 off 63 balls, filled with 13 boundaries and six maximums, was a masterclass in chasing.

Deepak Hooda played a crucial cameo, hitting some lusty blows to keep the scoreboard ticking. The CSK bowlers, failing to find their mark, were taken to cleaners in the death overs.

The climax of the chase saw LSG needing 17 runs in the final over. Stoinis, undaunted, launched the first ball for a maximum and followed it up with three consecutive boundaries, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. 

The Australian all-rounder's breathtaking innings not only steered LSG to a thrilling six-wicket victory but also inked it as one of the most memorable run chases in IPL history.
