In a phenomenal achievement, Virat Kohli surpassed Indian captain Rohit Sharma to record most runs for India in the history of World Test Championship. The former Indian captain achieved the milestone during the ongoing first Test against South Africa at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

After being put into bat first, India had a disastrous start, losing skipper Rohit Sharma off a well-directed short delivery from ace Proteas pacer Kagiso Rabada. Young Yashasvi Jaiswal looked comfortable during his brief stay in the middle, but eventually lost his wicket to a full-length delivery from Nandre Burger.

Kohli, coming at number four, struck five gorgeous boundaries for his 64-ball 38 before getting out to an absolute peach of a delivery from Rabada. However, he overtook Rohit to register most runs for India in the WTC history.

Most runs for India in WTC history

  • Virat Kohli- 2101 in 57 innings
  • Rohit Sharma- 2097 in 42 innings
  • Cheteshwar Pujara- 1769 in 62 innings
  • Ajinkya Rahane- 1589 in 49 innings
  • Rishabh Pant- 1575 in 41 innings

Riding on Rabada's sensational bowling performance, South Africa have reduced India to 121 for five in 34.3 overs. As of writing, KL Rahul and R Ashwin are unbeaten in the middle, batting on 11* and 8*, respectively.
