Jasprit Bumrah, after going wicketless in his opening spell, eventually snared his first English victim of India’s five-match home series by deceiving Rehan Ahmed with a slower one in the afternoon session of Day 1. Rehan’s dismissal further worsened England’s troubles at 155-7 after ace spinners Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel had scythed through the visitor’s top-order.

Jasprit Bumrah and new-ball pace mate Mohammed Siraj both failed to strike in their opening spells as England raced to 55-0 in just 12 overs in the morning session. After Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel led India’s fightback by accounting for the first six English wickets over the course of the subsequent 31 overs, Bumrah eventually snared his maiden victim of the innings by deceiving lower-order batter Rehan Ahmed with a slower one.

Jasprit Bumrah surprised Ahmed with a slower delivery, which cut back outside off to kiss the inside edge of the bat. Wicketkeeper KS Bharat made a dive forward to complete an excellent catch as England lost its seventh wicket at 155.

Earlier in the day, England openers Zak Crawley (20) and Ben Duckett (35) both failed to convert their sublime starts at the top as they were dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin in quick succession.

Ashwin’s teammate Ravindra Jadeja himself snapped up Ollie Pope, senior man Joe Root and Tom Hartley to finish with three wickets in the innings. Jasprit Bumrah cleaned up Ben Stokes a while later to fold up the Englishmen for just 246 in 64.3 overs.
