Mitchell Santner sent Mitchell Marsh back to the pavillion for 36 (Twitter)
New Zealand staged a commendable comeback in Match 27 of World Cup 2023 after being put on the back foot by the robust opening partnership between Australian openers, David Warner and Travis Head. The duo chalked up a whopping 175 runs in just 19 overs, setting the stage for what seemed to be a formidable total.
AUS vs NZ: Santner's brilliant delivery ended Marsh's uneasy stint
However, when Mitchell Marsh strode to the crease at No. 3, things took a twist. After being demoted in the batting order due to Head who returned from an injury, Marsh's time at the crease was marred by uncertainty.
Despite his best efforts, Marsh's shaky 36 came to an abrupt halt in the 37th over. Kiwi spinner, Mitchell Santner cunningly tossed up the ball that swerved subtly with the arm.
Marsh, perhaps anticipating a different trajectory, hung back and attempted to steer it off-side. However, he played outside the line, and the ball, with a hint of mischief, clipped the top of the off-stump, signalling the end of Marsh's stint.
Meanwhile, as Australia seemed set for a colossal total nearing 400, the Kiwi bowlers, with an admirable display of skill, managed to change the momentum.
Claiming prized wickets of Warner, centurion Head, Steve Smith, and the recently dismissed Marsh, New Zealand's performance was nothing short of spectacular.
At present, with Australia perched at 274/4 in 38 overs and Labuschagne and Maxwell at the crease, the climax awaits. While the Aussies are under pressure to ramp up their total to around 375, the Kiwis will be eager to hold them below the 350 mark.
