Sealing a run-chase with a six is celebrated on a cricket field more often than not. West Indies Women, on the contrary, rued Stafanie Taylor doing it in a 167-run chase against Thailand Women in Lahore.
The development means that West Indies wouldn’t travel to India for the ICC Women’s World Cup later this year. Having participated in all but one edition of the tournament since 1993, West Indies, runners-up during the last World Cup in India 12 years ago, will have to watch the next showpiece event as spectators.
Unsurprisingly, most of their players were spotted crying after winning their third victory of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier. For the unversed, losses against Scotland and Pakistan ended up hurting the Hayley Matthews-led side.
West Indies Fail To Qualify For Women’s World Cup 2025
In order to qualify as the second-ranked team behind Pakistan, West Indies needed to win within 10.1 overs. Short of 11 runs at the 10-over mark, an alternate option for West Indies was to score 172 in 11 overs to outdo Bangladesh’s NRR (Net Run Rate).
Hence, on the penultimate delivery of the over, Taylor needed to score a four to tie the match before hitting a six on the final ball. That being said, she timed the ball exceedingly well to hit a six which she might regret for years to come.
Having scored 168/4 in 10.5 overs at a mind-blowing run rate of 15.50 at the Gaddafi Stadium, West Indies put on display a commendable performance led by Matthews’ 29-ball 70 comprising 11 fours and two sixes.
Both tied on six points from three wins, Bangladesh (0.639) and West Indies (0.626) were separated by the barest of NRR margins. Having defeated Bangladesh on Thursday, West Indies should consider themselves a tad bit unfortunate to be finishing behind them despite them losing to Pakistan today.
