Gill Achieves Unreal Milestone On Captaincy Debut
After Rohit Sharma's exit from the longest format, Shubman Gill picked up the big responsibility of leading Team India in the longest format. Taking up the huge role in the challenging English conditions was not easy, but Gill’s top effort silenced all his critics after smashing a ton on his captaincy debut.
Stepping into the number 4 position after Sai Sudharsan’s dismissal, Gill stitched a game-changing partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal. While pushing the team towards a strong total, Gill added more spark to the innings, blasting a stunning century off just 140 balls. With his first ton in England, he etched his name alongside Virat Kohli and other legendary Indian Test captains in the record books.
With that stunning knock, he becomes the seventh Indian Test skipper to hit a century in England. The legacy began back in 1967 when Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi carved his name into history with a majestic 149 in Leeds.
Stepping into a Test series against England on English soil was not an easy task, but Shubman Gill and Co. made it look easy. While batting first, Team India had a great start as Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul stitched a 91-run opening Partnership. After Rahul’s dismissal, Jaiswal tightened his grip and smashed a thrilling ton in 144 balls.
As debutant Sai Sudharsan didn’t have a desired outing, captain Shubman Gill and Jaiswal’s partnership powered India to a strong total. In his first outing as captain, Gill led from the front with a gritty century, while Rishabh Pant, the number 5 batter played his part to perfection with a solid half-century. At stumps on Day 1, Team India stood strong at 359/3.
