Indian senior team head coach Gautam Gambhir received appreciation from fans for backing spinner Varun Chakaravarthy into India’s Champions Trophy squad. This comes after Chakaravarthy delivered a match-winning spell against New Zealand.

India beat New Zealand by 44 runs in the final league fixture of the 2025 Champions Trophy. Batting first, India put up a fighting total of 249 runs with Shreyas Iyer slamming 79 off 98 balls.

Meanwhile, in the second inning, Indian bowlers controlled the scoring rate of New Zealand by bowling tight spells.

Fans applaud Gambhir for Varun Chakaravarthy’s success

Varun Chakaravarthy, the mystery spinner, delivered a sensational spell, picking 5 wickets for 42 runs in his 10 overs quota. He dismissed key batters, including Glenn Phillips and Will Young.

Meanwhile, fans on social media credited head coach Gautam Gambhir for Chakaravarthy’s resurgence. The coach reportedly brought Chakaravarthy into the setup as he built a spin-heavy bowling lineup.

Despite Varun Chakaravarthy’s past failures in Dubai, Gambhir’s trust turned out to be a game changer as he helped India qualify for the semi-final of the 2025 Champions Trophy.

That being said, India has advanced to the knockout stage of the Champions Trophy 2025 edition. They will meet Australia in the first semi-final scheduled for March 4 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
