Varun Chakravarthy made his return to India’s ODI setup after making his format debut last month. The crafty leg-spinner was included in India’s playing XI in place of fast bowler Harshit Rana for their final Group A match of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy against New Zealand.
Chakravarthy, who is also a devout KKR zealot through and through, seems to be carrying the franchise’s essence with him as he was spotted using their handkerchief instead of the standard Team India one during the high-stakes encounter.

Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy was spotted using a KKR handkerchief at one stage of the match against New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday, March 2. The handkerchief was captured on camera during the start of the tenth over of the New Zealand innings.
On the cricketing front, Varun Chakravarthy kept Team India in the hunt against New Zealand by picking up the prized scalp of well-set opening batter Will Young earlier in his bowling spell.
Earlier in the match, India batted first and accrued 249-9 from 50 overs. Shreyas Iyer at number four top-scored for the ‘Men in Blue’ by making 79 fighting runs off 98 balls with four boundaries and two huge sixes. For New Zealand, fast bowler Matt Henry picked up a sizzling five-wicket haul and he received much assistance from fellow pacemen Kyle Jamieson and Will O’Rourke.
In the run chase, the ‘Black Caps’ slipped to 49-2 at one stage with the loss of both openers, Will Young and Rachin Ravindra. Kane Williamson subjugated a fighting half-century to steer New Zealand past the 100-run mark by sharing crucial partnerships with Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips.
