As England captain, luck has not been with Ollie Pope, who, in the past, has made countless errors when it came to DRS decisions. However, on Thursday, he finally ended the unwanted streak with the wicket of India opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal. In Ben Stokes' absence, there have been countless times when Pope has led the England side.

In those matches, Pope has always gotten the DRS call wrong, as every time he has asked for a review, the decision has gone against England. But in the fifth Test vs India, Pope finally made the right call.

Pope breaks his unwanted DRS streak

Gus Atkinson bowled a length ball to Jaiswal, as it angled back in and clipped him on the back-leg. The original decision from the umpire was not out, and Pope took the review. His instincts finally worked as there was no edge, and the ball was hitting the stumps. Hence, after 14 unsuccessful attempts, Pope finally called it correct, as the decision went in England's favour.

The umpire initially felt there was an inside-edge, but Pope listened to his gut-feeling, and it paid off, finally as Jaiswal was dismissed for 2. Also, after losing four tosses in a row, Pope broke that streak, and won the coin flip against Gill.

Why is Pope captaining England?

England's regular skipper, Ben Stokes, injured his shoulder in the fourth Test match, and the all-rounder looked in pain during the Manchester Test. Hence, the regular England captain opted out of the Oval match, and was replaced by Ollie Pope, who is the current vice-captain of the side.

Prior to the Oval Test, Pope had led England in four Tests, losing the toss in all. Also, he has a formidable record as captain, winning three out of the four matches he has led.
