England soared past Trent Boult’s sublime new-ball blitz with scintillating Ben Stokes’ century and 96 counterattacking punches from opener Dawid Malan. After the hosts were reduced to 13-2 inside three overs, the two cricketers shared 199 runs together as England ended up mounting 368 upfront.

Ben Stokes tumbles English records with 182

Hosts England, in their pursuit of taking a lead in the series after winning the second ODI, lost opener Jonny Bairstow to Trent Boult’s new-ball dexterity off the first ball of the match. The speedster also removed batting veteran Joe Root to reduce the Englishmen to 13-2 within his opening spell.

Thereafter, opening batsman Dawid Malan formed a counterattacking 199-run partnership with comeback man Ben Stokes. The two added their runs in just 165 balls, before Malan was denied his fifth ODI century at 96 to become Boult’s third successive victim of the innings.

Stokes, however, carried on his full-blooded batting approach to belt his fourth ODI hundred, and his first since revoking his ODI retirement. The all-round veteran smacked nine sixes and 15 boundaries to chart a scintillating 182 from just 124 balls. The innings marked the highest-ever individual score for any English batsman in an ODI game.

Captain Jos Buttler bludgeoned a high-flying Boult upon his arrival and left a 38-run cameo to turbo-charge the English innings. Lower-order failed to capitalise on Stokes’ thoroughbred batting effort as hosts slumped from 336-4 to 368 all out inside 49 overs.

Trent Boult finished with 5-51 in the high-scoring innings to register his sixth ODI five-fer. Ben Lister also captured three wickets from his end, including that of Ben Stokes to trigger a lower-order collapse within the English camp.
