Devon Conway scored 64(33) vs MI Cape Town [Source: Durban Super Giants/X.com]
Weeks after failing to find buyers at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, New Zealand opener Devon Conway continues to show his supreme form across formats with a statement knock on his debut for the Durban Super Giants in the first match of SA20 2025/26.
The player was recently released by the Chennai Super Kings into the auction and had set a base price of 2 crore INR; however, could not find an opening bid, despite teams requiring overseas openers.
Devon Conway's statement debut for DSG
While batting first on day 1 of the brand new SA20 season for DSG, Conway opened the innings alongside his fellow Blackcaps player Kane Williamson and stitched a 96-run opening stand in Cape Town and scored a fifty in his first match for the franchise.
During his 33-ball stay at the crease, the left-hand bat scored 64 runs with the help of 7 fours and two sixes to put his team at a promising position of 137/3 at the 12.1 over mark before he was dismissed by Trent Boult, as he tried to attack the deep square leg boundary.
At the time of writing, his foundation has helped the Super Giants to 199/4 at the end of 18 overs in the first innings, with set batters Aiden Markram (22*) and Evan Jones at the crease.
This fifty from the batter at a strike rate of 193.93 comes at the back of his recent 227, 100 and 60 scores against West Indies in Tests and equally solid white-ball performances, exhibiting fine form across formats.
Previously, he has played 29 matches for the five-time IPL champions and scored 1080 runs at a strike rate of 139.71, including the match-winning 47(25) vs Gujarat Titans in the 2022 IPL final. While he has gone unsold at the auction, he can still be swooped in as a replacement player, in case of any injury to any overseas opener during or ahead of the season.
He is also set to feature in the upcoming ODI and T20I series against India from January 11 and will again have a chance to prove his worth as a handy top-order batter who can also keep the wickets.
