The Narendra Modi Stadium witnessed a masterclass in batting as New Zealand's Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra stamped their authority in the opening fixture of the World Cup 2023 against England on Thursday.

ENG vs NZ: Conway-Ravindra show floored England in World Cup opener

Making their maiden appearances in the ODI World Cup, both batsmen made it a memorable one. Conway, showcasing his elite form, clinched his fifth ODI ton in just 83 deliveries. A staggering innings, his century was studded with 13 boundaries and a couple of sixes, speaking volumes of his knack for delivering on big stages.

But the spectacle wasn't limited to Conway alone. Following suit, Ravindra took the English bowlers to the cleaners, accumulating a century off just 79 balls. His stunning knock included nine fours and four impressive sixes, ensuring England's bowlers had no respite. In doing so, Ravindra also became New Zealand's youngest and fastest centurion in ODI World Cups.

The Kiwis, however, didn't have the ideal start to their chase of 283. Will Young, Conway's opening partner, departed early, failing to get off the mark. This early hiccup paved the way for Ravindra to join Conway, and what ensued was a batting clinic.

The pair stitched together an innings-reviving partnership, displaying a mix of aggression and technique. Their smart handling of both pace and spin from the English attack was a sight to behold.

Meanwhile, with New Zealand cruising at 222/1 in 31 overs, Conway stands tall with 120*, while Ravindra is not far behind, unbeaten at 100. Needing just 61 from the remaining 19 overs, the duo seems poised to lead New Zealand to a comprehensive victory, given their current form.

Earlier, England set a challenging target anchored by Joe Root's splendid 77. However, the English batting found a formidable adversary in Matt Henry, who returned figures of 3/48 in his 10-over spell.

With the match precariously poised, England faces the daunting task of breaking this formidable partnership. The big question is whether the English bowlers can conjure a miracle or Conway and Ravindra continue their dominance. The World Cup 2023 has undoubtedly kicked off with a bang!
