A must win encounter on the cards for CSK and the opening pair of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway brought their best at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

The prolific opening pair took the Delhi Capitals bowling attack to the cleaners and hammered a commanding 223 for 3 on the board.

Conway, Ruturaj fire all guns blazing

Opting to bat first in a game that CSK had to win to qualify for the playoffs, they came out with a positive frame of mind and attacked right from the word go. The CSK side had a rolicking start, with 30 runs inside the first 3 overs. It was Gaikwad who took the initiative and was the chief aggressor inside the power-play.

Gaikwad slowed down after breaching the 20-run mark, but pressed the accelerator when he targeted the DC spinners, especially Kuldeep Yadav. The CSK opener smashed him for three sixes in a row and brought his fifty inside 37 deliveries.

Conway, who initially played the role of a second fiddle, joined the fun and used his array of shots to up his strike-rate. At one stage, it looked as if Gaikwad will become the first centurion for CSK this season, but he was eventually dismissed by Chetan Sakariya for 79.

Once Gaikwad departed, Conway took the mantle and played one of the innings of the IPL. Agianst an attack that lacked the cutting edge, the Kiwi batter made full use of the situation and dealt in sixes towards the slog end.

Shivam Dube was promoted at number 3, and the in-form CSK batter didn't waste a single second as he went after Lalit Yadav with a couple of lusty blows. Etching closer to his maiden IPL hundred, Conway miscued a shot and was sent back for a well-compiled 87 off 52 balls.

Ravindra Jadeja (20 off 7) provided the late fireworks as the Super Kings managed to post a mammoth total on the board.
