Indian International Tilak Varma made an unforgettable impression on his County Championship debut, scoring an unbeaten 98* for Hampshire against Essex on Day 2 at Chelmsford. The stylish left-hander showcased his wide range of stroke play and immaculate maturity, walking in at four after his side lost two early wickets.

After losing 2 for just 34 runs on the board, Hampshire’s new number four, Tilak Varma, held firm, constructing a composed and commanding innings under pressure. He blended with some classical style of batting, featuring elegant cover drives flowing off the middle of his bat, repeatedly ruling the off-side field with class.

His footwork against spin was equally impressive, as he played some outrageous shots, including a daring reverse-sweep six that drew loud applause from the local crowd. Despite the tricky conditions and disciplined bowling attack in front, Tilak maintained control throughout, rotating the strike smartly and punishing loose deliveries with control.

Tilak Two Runs Away from a Century on Day 3

After bowling Essex out for 296 on Day 2, Hampshire needed their batters to capitalize on ideal batting conditions. Making his county debut, Tilak rose to the occasion, becoming the mainstay of the innings even as wickets tumbled around him.

The young left-hander showed great composure, constructing brief stands before building a solid 129-run unbeaten partnership with Liam Dawson, who contributed a fluent 79* off 132 balls till stumps.
