Joe Root tops the charts with 21428 runs in 369 matches, and most of his runs have come in the Test format, where he excels. Alastair Cook, and Kevin Pietersen occupy the second and third spots, as the duo tormented the bowlers in their playing days.

Stokes sits at the 11th spot, and interestingly is the only all-rounder in the list, with the others being designated batters. His batting has taken a dip in the last few years, but the England captain continues to be a backbone of his side.

Other records broken by Stokes in Manchester

On Day 2 of the Manchester Test, the all-rounder showed his prowess with the ball, as he picked up a fifer to push India on the back foot. In the process, Stokes also joined an elite English players who have taken a five-wicket haul in Tests as captain.

He was the 16th English captain to have taken a fifer as the leader of the team, and his spell inspired an English comeback, as the hosts looked in tatters when the Indian batters were playing well.
