Shubman Gill in action for India [Source: @ICC/x]
Shubman Gill started off his Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 campaign on a torrid note, considering the alluring right-hander managed to accrue just 60 runs in his first three innings at Adelaide and Brisbane. The 25-year-old missed out the opening Test of the tour, where Team India emerged victorious by a 295-run margin to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
As India gears up for the all-important fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), here is a look at Shubman Gill’s stats in overseas matches since January 2021.
Is Shubman Gill’s form a worrying sign for India?
Shubman Gill announced his arrival to India’s Test team on a triumphant note at the MCG back in December 2020. Making his debut as a brash 21-year-old opening batter, the cricketer pounded match-winning scores of 45 and 35* across both innings of the match.
A couple of weeks later, Gill found himself at the precipice of his early career by orchestrating India’s remarkable fortress-breaching victory over Australia at The Gabba. The cricketer punched out a swift 91 in a tall chase, before Rishabh Pant’s identical knock finished the job for the tourists.
As it turned out, ever since Shubman Gill smacked that heroic 91 in Brisbane back in January 2021, the cricketer has not scored a single half-century in the 16 Test innings that have gone by in overseas matches for India.
Shubman Gill stats in overseas Tests since January 2021:
Information | Player |
---|---|
Innings | 16 |
Runs | 267 |
Average | 17.80 |
50s/100s | 0/0 |
Highest | 36 |
Maintaining an abysmal average of 17.80 in overseas Tests during the period, the lanky top-order batter has tallied just 267 runs with a mere 36 being his highest score.
Owing to his overseas downfall, Gill’s overall Test average has also dropped to 35.76 after playing 31 matches for India. Moreover, back in mid-2023, the charismatic batter was relegated from his usual opening position in favor of rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal.
As of now, Shubman Gill is gearing up to return to the venue which started it all, the iconic MCG in Melbourne. With 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series locked at 1-1 after the washout in Brisbane earlier this week, the Indian team management will be banking on its generational talent to attain his lost touch with the bat.
