Hobart Hurricanes’ juggernaut rolled on as Nathan Ellis and co. decimated defending champions Brisbane Heat at the latter’s home ground of The Gabba in match 36 of the BBL 2024-25 season. The outcome marked the seventh successive win for the Hurricanes as they re-established themselves back into the top of the eight-teams points table.

Brisbane Heat opener Nathan McSweeney faltered for a single to BBL debutant Marcus Bean in just the second over of the match. Captain and comeback man Usman Khawaja carted three boundaries and a six in his fiery top-order cameo of 23 from just nine balls before the left-hander chipped one towards Jake Doran at mid-on off Hurricanes skipper Nathan Ellis.

Marnus Labuschagne, batting at number three sustained Brisbane Heat’s brisk scoring pace with a surge of boundaries. The Australian international shared 69 quick runs with Matt Renshaw (40 off 25), before two quick wickets, including that of Max Bryant for just four hampered Heat’s charge for a while at 111-4 in 11.2 overs.

Marnus Labuschagne raged on to list his second BBL half-century with a boundary-ladened 77 off 44 balls. Marking his career-best BBL score, Labuschagne’s late hitting ensured Brisbane Heat soared past the 200-run mark, reaching 201-6 by the completion of their 20 overs.

Tom Alsop also chipped in with a swift 27-ball 39 during his 85-run partnership with Labuschagne, before both cricketers were dismissed in the final over by Nathan Ellis (3-42).

Heat vs Hurricanes Highlights: Jewell, Mitchell Owen Explode In Powerplay Overs

Hobart Hurricanes raced to 47-0 by the end of the four-over opening powerplay, and to 80-0 before the end of the seventh over of the run-chase. Openers Caleb Jewell and Mitchell Owen set up an exciting chase with a barrage of boundaries at the top, with Owen himself chipping in with an explosive 20-ball 44.

Spencer Johnson and Mitchell Swepson tilted the momentum back in Heat’s favor with the quick wickets of Owen and Charlie Wakim respectively as the Hurricanes reached 97-2 around the halfway stage of the innings.

Caleb Jewell shared another 81 runs with number four batter Nikhil Chaudhary as the two cricketers blazed the Hurricanes towards 166-2 in less than 16 overs. While Chaudhary made a fiery 27-ball 39, Jewell top-scored in the innings by crafting 76 runs from just 49 balls with nine boundaries and one six.

Even after the two well-set batters were removed in quick succession by Xavier Bartlett and Spencer Johnson, Matthew Wade pulled off the job by launching a huge last-ball six as Hurricanes cantered themselves to its seventh successive win of the BBL 2024-25 season.
