Hobart Hurricanes won the BBL 2024-25 title by defeating David Warner-led Sydney Thunder in a one-sided finale at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Monday, January 27. Hurricanes opener Mitchell Owen played starring role with the bat on the grand evening by making lightwork of an otherwise tricky run-chase.
Here’s the timeline of how Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Thunder panned out in Sydney:
Hurricanes vs Thunder Highlights: Warner, Sangha Race Thunder To 97 In 10 Overs
David Warner and Jason Sangha got Sydney Thunder off to a flier by sharing 97 runs at the top of the order for the opening wicket in just 10 overs. The two cricketers extracted 40 of those runs from the opening four-over powerplay phase, and reached team 50 in just 5.2 overs.
Captain Warner carted five boundaries and a six during the partnership until he nicked one towards Matthew Wade off his Hobart Hurricanes counterpart Nathan Ellis around the halfway stage of the innings.
Hurricanes vs Thunder Highlights: Meredith, Ellis Fight Back With Three Wickets Each
Moments after dismissing David Warner, Nathan Ellis also got rid of Thunder’s number three Matthew Gilkes for a first-ball duck. Well-set Jason Sangha completed his half-century during a fresh 37-run third wicket partnership with Sam Billings, and went on top-score in the Sydney Thunder innings by composing 67 runs off 42 balls.
Oliver Davies (26 off 19) and Chris Green (16 off 9) chipped in with quick runs during the slog overs as the Thunder reached a competitive 182-7 by the completion of their innings.
For the Hurricanes, Nathan Ellis got the prized scalp of half-centurion Jason Sangha to claim 3-23 from his four overs. Riley Meredith also picked up three wickets, all during the death overs, including that of in-form Billings to finish with 3-27.
Hurricanes vs Thunder Highlights: Mitchell Owen Blows Away Thunder With 39-Ball Ton
Hobart Hurricanes opener Mitchell Owen shattered numerous BBL records during his opening blitzkrieg in the run-chase. The cricketer muscled a 39-ball century to notch up BBL’s fastest hundred in the final, fastest by any Hobart Hurricanes player, and the joint-fastest in BBL history.
Owen smeared six boundaries and 11 sixes to clatter 108 runs from just 42 balls to bolt Hurricanes to 138-2 at the halfway stage of the innings.
For the Thunder, Tanveer Sangha picked up two wickets in the space of an over in the form of Caleb Jewell (13 off 12) and Nikhil Chaudhary (1 off 2) but his twin strikes failed to deter Owen’s six-hitting rampage.
Hurricanes vs Thunder Highlights: McDermott Secures Winning Runs As Hurricanes Lift Maiden Title
Forming forces at 139-3 after the dismissal of Mitchell Owen to Tom Andrews, Ben McDermott (18* off 12) and senior wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade (32* off 17) shrugged off the remaining runs with seven wickets and 5.5 overs to spare to steer Hobart Hurricanes to its first-ever BBL title.
McDermott notched up the winning boundary in the 15th over to seal the historic moment.
