Kane Williamson celebrating his 29th Test ton on Day 2 (x.com)
After wrapping up Bangladesh’s first innings off the first ball of the second morning, New Zealand inched closer to the hosts with a meticulous triple-figure epic from Kane Williamson by stumps in Sylhet.
Williamson’s ton, Taijul’s four-fer sum up Day 2
Up against Bangladesh’s first innings total of 310, both New Zealand openers Devon Conway and Tom Latham failed to convert their cautious starts into a big one as the two cricketers had their innings packed inside the morning session.
New Zealand batting veteran and milestone man Kane Williamson, arriving to the crease at 36-1, defied Taijul Islam and other Bangladesh spinners for a major part of the day until a lapse of concentration towards the end curtailed his stay. The cricketer batted for nearly five hours and watchfully guided his side near the hosts total with 104 alluring runs.
Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips listed attacking 40s from their ends in the middle-order while Bangladesh spinners kept chipping in with timely wickets to restrict the ‘Black Caps’ at 266-8 by stumps on Day 2.
Taijul Islam snapped four New Zealanders on the eventful day, including the key wickets of well-set Mitchell and centurion Williamson. His spin mates Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nayeem Hasan and Mominul Haque also accounted for a wicket each while new-ball speedster Shoriful Islam dismissed Henry Nicholls in the afternoon session.
