Babar Azam & Shaheen Afridi Make Huge DRS Blunder Against Afghanistan

Shaheen Afridi posed a desperate outlook in drawing Pakistan skipper Babar Azam into a horrible review during the critical stage of the ICC World Cup 2023 league-stage encounter against Afghanistan on Monday (October 23).

As Pakistan felt the heat of Afghan's spirited run-chase in Chennai, their pace spearhead asked for a woeful review against well-set top-order batter Rahmat Shah.

Brought in for a crucial second spell with the game running out of Pakistan's grasp, Shaheen got the Afghanistan right-hander struck on the front pad and erupted in an exaggerated appeal at the beginning of the 32nd over in the chase.

The umpire quickly adjudged Shah not out after finding faults in the line of the delivery and its contact point with the pad. However, Shaheen stood convinced that he had his man and urged skipper Babar to immediately opt for the review.

As it panned out, both Shaheen and Babar were left red-faced in the moment after the hawkeye confirmed that not only was the ball going down the leg-side but the impact was also always outside the leg-stump.

Shaheen's Desperate Review For Pakistan

The low skidder from Shaheen had jammed on the front pad but going down the leg-side with the angle from around-the-wicket for the left-arm quick. Shaheen was so desperate for the breakthrough with the game slipping out of Pakistan's grasp that he almost forgot the precious detail and even encouraged Babar to ask for the DRS intervention.

The technology, however, ultimately upheld the right decision made by the umpire, who didn't lose sight of the delivery's whereabouts and went in favour of Rahmat, allowing him to continue his measured innings for Afghanistan.

With 68 runs required off the remaining 65 deliveries, the incorrect review from Pakistan further tilted the scales in Afghanistan's favour for a historic upset. Rahmat soon managed to cross the 50-run mark and record a much-deserved milestone for his side.

The solid No.3 has been one of Afghanistan's most promising players in the batting department and vindicated the faith provided to him by the team management over the years.
