Promising Indian batter Shubman Gill had a memorable outing in the Asia Cup 2023, amassing 302 runs at a magnificent average of 75.50 and a blistering strike rate of 93.50. The stylish right-handed batter will play a significant role in the upcoming ODI series against Australia, as he is expected to spearhead the Indian batting in the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. 

Meanwhile, the much-awaited series against Australia provides Gill with a golden opportunity to dethrone Pakistani skipper Babar Azam and become the top-ranked ODI batter. 

Gill, who is supposed to feature in all three matches of the series, needs to score 200 runs to claim the top spot in the ICC ODI batters' rankings, toppling over Babar in the standings. 

In his brief international career, Gill has already established himself as a vital cog in the Indian ODI setup, garnering 1739 runs, including a double ton, at a phenomenal average of 64.41 and a strike rate of 102.05. 

On the other hand, Babar Azam, who had an underwhelming Asia Cup 2023, won't be playing an ODI until the World Cup and could, therefore, lose the top position in the ICC rankings. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj, who derailed Sri Lanka with an incredible spell in the Asia Cup final, has jumped eight places up to the top position in the ODI bowlers' rankings.
