A disciplined performance with the ball, followed by a dominating chase with the bat, helped Delhi Capitals to outclass UP Warriorz in the last league game of the ongoing Women's Premier League (WPL 2023). Delhi Capitals finished the league stage at the top of the points table, qualifying directly to the WPL Final.

McGrath's late fireworks propel UP to 138

After being asked to bat first, UP Warriorz got off to a decent start, scoring 38 of the first six overs and lost one wicket. Shweta Sehrawat started well, hitting four boundaries but was sent back by Radha Yadav in the very first ball of her spell. Alyssa Healy, who started slowly at the other end, found ways to score boundaries regularly.

Looking for a wicket, skipper Meg Lanning introduced Alice Capsey into the attack and the eighteen-year-old managed to send back Healy, limiting UP to 69 for two at the halfway mark.

The Capitals’ spin unit successfully kept the Warriorz quiet until the slog overs, giving just 25 runs between 10th to 16th over.

Tahlia McGrath kept holding one end, with wickets falling at the other and unleashed her striking game in the death overs, eyeing a big finish to the innings. Capsey did come back to the attack and bowled a double-wicket-maiden but McGrath continued the onslaught from her side, extracting 33 off the last two overs and UP posted a respectable 138 for six in 20 overs.

Chasing 139, Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning continued to give Delhi a brisk start. Verma did lose her wicket after scoring 21 off 16, but Lanning at the other end was in a different flow, scoring 39 off 23, taking Delhi to 67 for one at the end of the powerplay.

UP did manage to take two quick wickets, including the wicket of Lanning right after the powerplay which marked the arrival of in-form Capsey, who continued from where she left last night, going for big shots from the word go.

The contest was long gone but the battle between Sophie Ecclestone and Capsey was worth looking at. Capsey did win the battle with the ball earlier in the game and went on to dominate with the bat at the start but Ecclestone managed to have the last laugh at the end. Marizanne Kapp complimented Capsey well and remained unbeaten till the end, taking the Capitals across the line with more than two overs remaining.
