In a crucial quarterfinal match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 between Maharashtra and Punjab at the Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara, Punjab captain Abhishek Sharma failed to make a big impact with the bat. Known for his consistent performances throughout the tournament, Abhishek could only manage 19 runs off 16 balls, cutting his stay at the crease short.

Batting first, Maharashtra posted a challenging target of 275 runs. Punjab’s opening pair — Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh — came out with intent but couldn’t provide a solid start. The duo managed to add just 25 runs before Prabhsimran Singh was dismissed by Mukesh Choudhary, who represents Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL.

The turning point came during the 8th over of Punjab’s innings when Mukesh Choudhary struck again. On the third ball of the over, Choudhary bowled a short delivery outside off. Abhishek tried to pull it towards square leg, but the shot resulted in a top edge. The ball went high, and the cover fielder comfortably took the catch, sending Abhishek back to the pavilion for just 19 runs, including four boundaries.

Choudhary’s second breakthrough left Punjab struggling at 25/2, with both openers back in the hut and a daunting chase ahead.

For Maharashtra, Arshin Kulkarni was the standout performer with the bat, scoring an impressive 107 runs. Ankit Bawne also contributed with a solid 60 runs before being dismissed by Naman Dhir.

On the bowling front, Punjab’s Arshdeep Singh shone bright, picking up 3 wickets, while Naman Dhir and Abhishek Sharma chipped in with 2 wickets and 1 wicket, respectively.

At the time of writing, Punjab are at 58/4 in 14 overs.
