In an incredible display of skill, Australia’s Lucy Hamilton made history during the 30th match of the 2024 Women’s Big Bash League between Melbourne Stars Women (MSLW) and Brisbane Heat Women (BHW) at the Drummoyne Oval, Sydney. At just 18 years and 193 days old, Hamilton became the youngest player ever to take a five-wicket haul in WBBL history.
The match started with BHW winning the toss and electing to bowl, which proved to be the right choice. Hamilton, bowling for Heat, stunned everyone with her fiery performance, taking 5 wickets for just 8 runs in 4 overs. She first removed Yastika Bhatia for 8 runs, then sent Melbourne Stars' captain Annabel Sutherland and their star batter Meg Lanning back to the pavilion for just 13 runs. But she wasn’t done yet! She followed up by dismissing Tess Flintoff and Deepti Sharma, finishing off with a fifth wicket and sealing her historic achievement.
Lucy Hamilton Removes Deepti Sharma
The moment of glory came in the 15th over when Hamilton took her fifth wicket of the day, getting Deepti Sharma caught by a brilliant back-of-the-hand slower delivery. Deepti, attempting a slog, missed the ball and got struck on the back thigh.
The umpire raised the finger, and despite Deepti opting for a review, the replay confirmed the decision, with the ball hitting the stumps. With no bat involved, Hamilton created history with five-wicket haul officially in the books. With Lucy being the pick of the bowlers, she helped Heat restricted Melbourne Stars Women to just 138 runs in their 20 overs.
At the time of writing, Brisbane Heat Women are at 125 for 4 in 15.5 overs.
